Microsoft Conquered !!!

April 13th, 2008

When Luck Shines, there’s a heavy downpour of opportunities and success. This is what I felt after being being addressed “Congrats Manish! You have been selected for the internships, just tell us the time frame when you would like to pursue it?” It still echoing in my ears, what a pleasant surprise! I never ever thought of this day. My whole family is delighted, too much delighted, too too much!! :)

Want to know the whole story? Read patiently below, or test your patience.

We left Manipal for Shimoga at 5PM on Friday leaving behind the sessionals at a risk, well its a bit stupidity on my part to abandon the interview just for the exams. We were total of 7 people who headed on a Qualis. It takes three and a half hour to reach Shimoga by road, which crosses Augumbe Point (better known as Sunset Point). We stopped for five minutes just to have a look at the place and then headed on.

Reached Shimoga at 8 at night, had our dinner and went to station to catch our train, we had a third AC ticket which is supposed to be reimbursed by the Microsoft guys. The train left at 10 and reached Bangalore at 5 in the morning. We took a hotel room, 7 people in a room, got fresh, changed to formals, dumped our belongings and went to Exam Center without breakfast.

At the center we were told to sit in room no 11, after we had done our first question, the Microsoft dudes told us that my mistake they had put us in the wrong section, so now we will face a different pattern of exam. Our paper started at 11AM. First question was traversing a matrix in spiral order and secondly deleting n nodes out of every 2n nodes in a linklist.

Results came out in 5 minutes, 3 out of 8 people got selected. Now I had to face two rounds of interview. IN the first round, I was asked to implement memcpy and second to reverse adjacent nodes of a link list using address not values. The interviewer was very much impressed by my approach as I had prior idea of the both questions, thanks to PCS and DS papers which we had been taught we studied ourselves.

Second round was the most dangerous round. The problem statement is as follows

Given a whole C/C++ program in a program buffer, remove the single and multi line comments from this program. Draw a Finite Automata (or DFA) for it and write down the corresponding program as precise as possible.

After writing this program, he evaluated it thrice each time finding some or the other minute and minutest errors (guess that person was a genius and had an eagle eyes, catching even the smallest bug). He asked me questions on hashing, clash in hashing values, open hashing. Order of hashing etc etc etc. After it was done, he asked me to wait outside.

After 5-10 mins, a guy came out and said exactly the same words which I had mentioned at the top of the post. After that we were busy waiting for Adi’s results. God’s luck shined on them too and rest two of my friends were also selected. Who two? Drown yourself if you didnt come to know by this time. Its Sathvik!. Then had my dinner at 9PM after exactly 24 hrs. All this time I was alive on WATER!

We left Bangalore at 10PM night by a horrible but the only bus available was of come National Travels (or something of the sort). It had only 8 seats left at the last of which we booked 7. God! All the seats were defective :( . Mine was turned, Harry’s seat didnt slide to semi-sleeper and bulk loads of problems. There were mosquitoes all inside the bus. Reached Manipal at 9:30 in the morning. Am deadly tired, writing this post after sleeping for 3 hrs and missing my lunch!

    interesting experience that yaar…. :o

    man! u guys really had the experiemce of a lifetime!!! :)

    ps- tell me more abt the problems some other time when we meet.
    pps- congrats again. :)

  2. Swap Says:

    Microsoft Sinha, I told you anyone who’s ever been employed by RH has a knack of getting into MS.

  3. surjodeb Says:

    @Swap:
    he he… Swap.-really nice opportunity to market ur company, eh?

    …cant stop laughing. :D

    Ps- U should really say it the other way around if u want more fame.
    “Anyone who has ever been employed by MS, will probably hav a better chance of getting into RH”. did i say it correctly? :)

  4. Ankur Shrivastava Says:

    @manish
    Congrats
    Way to go……..
    @surjodeb
    Nice said really nice but i think RH has a large number of Linux Servers which work great so dont want to have a Windows Experience there……..

  5. NeYawn Says:

    ~A personal *Congrats* on ther personal blog~ (wink)

  6. NeYawn Says:

    Well, I agree with Swap on that. He turned me off for RH long back. So did MS. Just when I thought I was through. :(

  7. Manish Says:

    Well, am still not 100% in, Its just a Internship, rest depends on my performance at HYD.

    @Surjodeb
    Better wait for Swap’s furthur comment. Well I havnt worked full time for RH, but you can say that I was associated with it for a long time.

  8. Swap Says:

    All were wrong except Manish. We’ve had 2.5 (manish is almost through, so yeah) part time employees (I would allow a full time) who got through MS.

    @Neyawn: Were you rejected by HR or in the interview round?

  9. Djays Says:

    CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. NeYawn Says:

    Sadly HR. And that hurt a bit. I was good in the final, Day Two Round. But guess I paid for not answering one of the six questions I was asked on Day One. So the HR started out with- Okay, This is gonna be really short… I did answer *her* question, but as I said..
    The day One guy’s third question was somewhat compliacted recursive one, and I did answer 2/3 questions he asked me. But just the last one, and he said- Even I got into MS after 12 years in second attempt. And I am from IIT Chennai. Good Luck. He then put me through a second interviewer, who cleared me off for Day Two.The IITC guy didnt select anyone he interviewed(something I keenly noticed.)
    –>Does that have something to do with a RH Job? ;)

  11. Manish Says:

    See the whole thing….
    We didnt face any HR round, only technical, technical and technical… What you call Technical Aptitude

    I was interviewed for 45 mins the first time and then some 50 mins for the second time.
    Was hungry a lot and those M$ guys were having Pizzas and cokes in front of a hungry person called *MANISH* while I was facing my second round…

  12. NeYawn Says:

    Hmm.. The Final “HR” interview was a technical one. The term was used just for disambiguation.But yeah, that was real good and challenging.
    And Hey, thanks for being quick Manish!
    I would strongly recommend (and wish) you put the amung.us widget on your blog. That way we can know how many people are concurrently online. And its cool.

  13. LUG Says:

    Manish Sinha ko LUG ki post se barkhast kiya jaye….
    usne LINUX ke saath dhokha kiya hai…
    usne LINUX ke dushmano se jaa kar hath mila liya hai…
    Manish Sinha se mera ek hi sawaal hai– yaa toh LUG ko chune ya fir LINUX ke dushmano ke saath kaam kare..

  14. surjodeb Says:

    hey there… seems like there’s been a lot of activity here… :)

    ps- can nyone spare a thought as to how prepare 4 tcs?- i desperately need a job!!!

    our very own mr.microsoft sinha might hav made it thru ms, but 4 ordinary earthlings such as myself can nyone provide a tip as to how to clear the tcs interview?

    ny help?…pls.

    @swap:
    didn’t get the funda on ur comment.what’s the 2.5 thing?…pls elaborate yaar.

  15. surjodeb Says:

    I jus realized i had posted this on the wrong blog (i think)(i saw it on Ankur’s):

    hehe.. i jus noticed that too. :D …throws light on how the comment posting service interprets the smileys. -so the way it parses it is probably that for a sequence of chars to be a smiley, there hav to be eyes(i.e.”:”) as the first character after the blank. (otherwise the parser goes to a different state, & interprets the rest of whatever follows as text nyways!- not exactly a flaw but something i’d prefer removed.-report this to ny concerned forum u might know of.)

    …jus wonderin, any idea which language the code 4 this parser is written in?

    @manish:
    why the focus on 7seats? kitney log thay tum? ps- my sympathies… i can feel ur pain… -had faced this same sort of situation once on an overnight bus drive from calcutta to siliguri once.n had the same problem of bein seated right above the left rear wheel.-which, as one would hav on a cheap West Bengal State Transport Corporation(WBSTC) bus, had no suspension at all.(-i could feel each n every small pebble as the tyre went over it.)
    as i said, i feel ur pain… :) n will probably hav a nightmare abt it tonight too!!! :)

  16. Swap Says:

    @NeYawn: My question was w.r.t RH. And no, unless you tell me who you are and remind me of the interview, I cannot comment further. I’ve interviewed close to a 100 people and it’s not easy to remember each one of them.

    @surjodeb: Well, 2 of my part-time employees got a job, Manish is half way through (as he says).

    @Manish: WHAT??!! Man, I can’t believe you were able to pass the interview in such a tough situation. Mind you guys, hunger is his biggest weakness. And with food in front, god knows how he even spoke.

  17. Manish Says:

    @LUG:
    Why dont you come out openly and say anything? Besides you have even given a false email ID I suppose.
    Everyone is commenting openly and frankly, be bold and disclose your name. The case with neYawn is a bit different. He’s making puzzles for us to guess his identity.
    Well, I can guess who has made this comment, but I prefer to be tight lipped without any proofs

    @All
    Cant I have the best of both worlds? I never dislike any technology without testing them out, If I start doing so I may limit myself to a very narrow world.

    @Surjodeb
    I would suppose you shed off that parsers and high stuff fundas for a time-being. This is coz I may have to live and work these stuffs in the future. If you want some more research on parsers try GNU Bison ( a parser generator) but please post any doubts reguarding Bison on any net forums, not here, I havnt tried it out yet.

  18. Manish Says:

    Well I have to pay credits to two people,since without them , getting in would be a bit more tougher or in extreme case somewhat impossible. One of them informed me of this offer and the other suggested me to take the road less traveled.
    Will write about it when the placement talks finishes here between Swap and Neyawn

    @Swap
    In comment no 8, you said, “All were wrong except Manish”. What you meant by that? Am unable to relate it with anything.

  19. Shubhendra Says:

    Dude great job! Really you shown that hard work does pay off…dekha tera summers ka intazaam ho hii gaya na!! Congrats once again tujhse shaam ko milunga abhi sessionals mein lagi padi hae…

  20. surjodeb Says:

    no no i’m no talkin abt generating a parser. :)
    i was sayin how does the inbuilt comment interpreter might be workin.
    as in, we r only inputting text chars.so there must be some sort of parsing/scripting structure in the background that takes care of bold/smileys/etc.etc….so that is what i was askin abt. :)
    ciao 8)

  21. Saumitra Bhave Says:

    surjodeb …. pehchana kya?? we met in mumbai… today i gt to knw exact ponounciation of ur name ..hehehe… manish wats ur time frame?? i called microsoft 2day … they will make accomodation fascilities for 1st 15 days….pls confirm with them…

    nice to hear from u yaar… :)

  23. Manish Says:

    Well Saumitra, What’s your time frame? hope you will be there in mid June?

    Only 15 days accommodation facilities? Are they crazy, its a alien place to us, where will we go? And do we hope to get a room near the campus. Maybe I guess the Campus would be out of the town.

  24. Manish Says:

    @Saumitra
    Check this link
    http://www.microsoft.com/india/msidc/productgroups.aspx
    This links shows what all works are done in MSIDC, hope we get one from these all !! Which one is your Interest area? JScript? Virtualization? SQL?

  25. surjodeb Says:

    @manish:
    pls kindly forward me saumitra’s email address at my email address.

  26. Saumitra Bhave Says:

    My time frame is from 19 may to 8 august …so we’ll sure meet there. surjdeb i gave u my email …i think its there on ur laptop…abt product groups… i dont even have hint abt there products…. at this time…. Education Systems grp intrests me…….

  27. Saumitra Bhave Says:

    some girl called priyanka was there at ur center.. she msgd me… any1 of u knw her?? how did she get my cell no???

  28. Saumitra Bhave Says:

    any1 of u got call letter from them?? i m still waiting for it…

  29. Manish Says:

    @Saumitra
    They will start dispatching call letter once they finish the interviews. Now its done, you should wait to get the letter, once I get the letter, I will inform here.

    Priyanka? There was no girl at our interview center!! Only guys ( better call them dudes :D ) I will wait for 10 days before taking another step

    You need her no? ;) Can I know the reason? They prefer to carry on all their conversation via mail

  30. surjodeb Says:

    @saumitra:
    yaar, i had saved it on my linux distro… n i’ve been stuck in windows 4 like ages now. :D

    get in touch with me at my first name (’surjodeb’) at the rate of …. u know the rest. as in, it’s the mail service of google.

    NOTE: all the text while mentioning the address is basically to avoid detection by all those automated spambots that continuously scour the internet 4 mailing addresses to spam.

  31. Swap Says:

    @surjodeb:

    I missed your first comment. I hope you are joking because it’s a defacing comment on our company and something I will not tolerate. We don’t need to “market” our company on Manish’s blog. There are better places.

    Neither did I word it incorrectly nor do is our goal to send employees to Microsoft. May be you should stop your “spamming streak” and try to read things on the net more carefully. For starters, trying to post your email publicly in a human-only readable way instead of posting a whole paragraph about it.

  32. Saumitra Bhave Says:

    arreee … i dont need her no. juss wanted to knw if she is selected look i got msg from 9341058882 saying “Hi this is priyanka frm blre. Got ur no. from a blog. Actually i’ve a microsoft interview tomor. so it will be gr8 if u can help me with tips. lukin frwd. sry 4 trouble”.

    can sum1 figure out whos tat??

  33. rwikrwik Says:

    Bolo Sinha ji ki jai !!!

  34. Manish Says:

    @Saumitra
    Best way- call her back and ask ;)

    Well, we were only 8 people for MSIDC at our center, rest all (around 150 or more) were for MSIT. So maybe she would be there, I would not have been able to figure her out.

  35. Manish Says:

    I skipped out something, I said that I would be paying due courtesy to people who had some role in getting me in.

    Firstly, I didnt know about this internship, one of my friend came to my room and told that whether I have applied or not, since date was over, Then he told me that dates will extended till 6th. After that I applied.

    Secondl, I was in a deep fix whether to give my interview at Mumbai or Bangalore, my preparations were horrible and I was not in a situation to sit for the Mumbai center. Giving the interview at Bangalore center meant leaving two papers of sessionals (I had already left one of them in 1st Sessional also). Being in a deep fix, I did ask some of my friends, but I was finding very difficult to convince myself. Finally one of my friend pressurized me to go to Bangalore center as she knew that my preparations were horrible and I would have been surely rejected if I went to Mumbai. She herself was very scared after giving this suggestion, what if I didnt make it through at Bangalore then??? My academics would be badly hit and I would be working day and night just to balance the loss.

    My work and people’s good wishes did work and am in. Special Thanks to both of them.

  36. Saumitra Bhave Says:

    i received their offer letter yesterday

  37. Swap's Blog Says:

    Acquired SCPanel…

    Hello all,
    It’s been one of the busiest weeks of my life. I haven’t slept for 4 nights in a row and am near complete exhaustion! On a happier note, it also had a day April 17th which will henceforth be called a red letter day in the history…

  38. Swap Says:

    Just before anyone rants about the above post, it’s a trackback (as I mentioned this page on my post) and not a comment. ;)

  39. Manish Says:

    Swap,
    I knew about your new venture a bit before your acquired. You also know how? I think it would be better if I try to modify this theme to separate trackbacks, pings and comments.

    @Saumitra,
    Congratulations.
    Me too waiting for mine. Did you get it via email or postal?

  40. Swap Says:

    Yes, I was wondering why it showed up like a comment. Just take up the default theme and compared the code. I am too lazy to look up and give it to you ;)

  41. damoN Says:

    oye manish this is not fair…u give credits to ur “two” friends, and u dont name them. dude, u got to name them. they deserve that…

    @surjodeb : hi dude
    people say that u too qualified for microsoft internship, but u have been foolin people all these days saying that u were rejected in the HR round.dude,is that true??

  42. Dhawal Says:

    Hi …

    Should have congratulated you earlier…. Anyways … Better Late than never ……. Congratulations …… Have a great learning experience….

  43. jitesh Says:

    hi i m also selected for internship programmme 2008. Did u got ur offer letter???

  44. Manish Says:

    @damoN
    Something are secret, well that doesnt matter. They two know whoever they are. I have personally thanked them and they got their reward.

    @Dhawal
    Thanks Dude! Me too trying my best, thanks again for the warm response.

    @Jitesh
    No! I havnt recieved the offer letter. Hope to get it soon.

  45. surjodeb Says:

    and back to the shadows and the sounds of silence i once again withdraw to… (milton) :)

  46. surjodeb Says:

    Mr.Sinha pls stop publishing my comments selectively!
    (it wasn’t fair or u to publish only my 2nd comment when it is actually a continuation of the 1st!)
    (n especially when the 2 were submitted together as one)

  47. damoN Says:

    oye manish!!
    fine agreed that this is ur blog…but you have no right to publish some portion of a comment which you like and delete the portion which u dont!!

    this should NOT happen again.

  48. jitesh Says:

    hey tell me abt ur email id or say yahoo chat id….
    I got the call frm Micro saying dont worry u will get ur letter but i desperate to C tht….
    hope d situation is same at ur end…..

    when u will be gng to join in hyder…?????

  49. Manish Says:

    @Surjodeb and damoN
    I dont moderate comments, all comments appear as soon as posted, if you put something objectionable or some comment looking like spam then it puts it in moderation queue

    I publish all comments, and all of you take care that your posts dont look like spam ,surjodeb’s comments really look like spams, that’s why they are held for moderation.
    So Mr. Surjodeb stop spamming and write meaningful things.
    Am seriously thinking of deleting comment no 45. This is more or less of spam

    @Surjodeb
    Think twice before you blame, your comments being held back for moderation are because of your comments. You yourself are responsible for it

  50. Manish Says:

    @Jitesh
    I also havnt got the offer letter. Saumitra had got it. Am dying to see it. God, when will my luck shine…
    Days are going bad..

    Am going to join in June, when you?

  51. surjodeb Says:

    @sinha:
    Mr.sinha please think twice before sayin what u say…
    i still hav my comment saved & am ready to publish it at the earliest if you so wish.

    I am really at a loss as to how it would constitute spam except maybe in the eyes of a rather narcissistic beholder.

  52. damoN Says:

    hmm…there was surely something interesting in the “first comment”…

  53. Manish Says:

    @Surjodeb
    The comment moderation queue contains no comments by you. And I have never ever deleted any comment in my blog.
    Check comment no 31. You are even accused of “spamming streak”
    Man! you spam all blogs at Manipal,want your presence felt everywhere.
    And you know the meaning of spam? I categorize comment no 45 as spam. It is really a spam, offtopic, posted just for the sake of posting

    And I dont need to think even once before saying anything, I know what am I speaking when it relates to spam.

  54. surjodeb Says:

    @damoN:
    it appears anything that might appear to present (quite sensibly and with evidence) things in a light quite different as to how Mr.Sinha would want those things to be presented is not acceptable to him.

    As you can imagine, it presented something he has been doing these last few months in a not so glorious light…

    @Mr.Sinha: please get a grip on yourself… i have not enough time to go around commenting everywhere, much less on your blog.however, as the excluded comment clearly pointed out i was needed to speak to you here after your comments on Ankur Bansal’s blog. (…the details were ptovided in the comment u chose to withhold.)

    it is so boring to see people as publicity hungry as yourself attempt desperately to cling on to the illusory facade of a personality they can muster by engaging in censorship on their personal blogs.
    pathetic, i tell you…

    but it’s your blog yaar.so goodbye.

  55. damoN Says:

    hey manish is that true??
    are you “publicizing” yourself through the blog??

    now what the hell is meant by “off topic”?? this is not a discussion forum…this is a blog…everybody is free to speak anything.

  56. Manish Says:

    @damoN
    Looks like you also loosing your decision making capacity. Use your own common sense. Why do I need to publicize myself through the blog? Its a public diary, I never ask anyone to comment, its all on their will.

    Yes, there is something called “off-topic” even in blogs. You should comment only on proper posts. Everyone is free to speak anything?? Its a crazy statement. Everyone is free to speak anything relating to that particular post. Milton’s poem has nothing to do with this post.

    @surjodeb
    Thanks God, you said BYE
    AND I AGAIN REPEAT, COMMENT QUEUE IS EMPTY! I didnt withhold any comment, I think you are clearly speaking lies. You are expert at it.
    And you surely have enough of useless time to go on and and comment in each and every blog

    @damoN
    You know, Astronomy club had been removed from Planet Manipal because Surjodeb was keeping on posting and posting and updating posts just to being all his posts on the top. The Planet got flooded by Surjodeb’s posts and all our posts were nowhere to be seen.
    If you dont know what is planet, check this link
    http://planet.ankurs.com/index.html
    its a feed aggregator

  57. surjodeb Says:

    @mr.sinha:
    please control…
    it is understandable that your rather big ego has been hurt.(no worries, your blog will be around for ages to remind you of the same.)

    as regards some of your baseless points:
    milton’s poem was actually a continuation of that comment you edited or withheld.(it was intended to help sweeten what would hav probably been a rather bitter pill for a person of your ego to swallow.)

    As regards the astronomy blog, kindly reinstate the same.-That weekend we had a slight change in format (& replaced all my nicknames on my posts on behalf of the club, [e.g. Dev, surjodeb], with a more formal sounding substitute in the form of my full name S_urjodeb B_asu ).The software at planet manipal unfortunately was probably unable to recognize that. Kindly intimate the concerned authorities(if you know them) of the same.

    Mr.Sinha you should also know a slanderous campaign on the net can have it’s consequences both on and off the net.And my silence is conditional, only on such a campaign not being initiated by you.

  58. Manish Says:

    @Surjodeb
    They removed the astronomy blog, because it was not the first time, such flooding had happened many time before. When you update take care that the timestamp is not updated.

    And Again and again I repeat, no comment has been withhold, don’t lie publicly.

    And everyone knows what kinda person you are, I dont need to clarify my point.

  59. surjodeb Says:

    …everyone does. And that too thankfully!

    (I should also ADD. - THE SAME HOLDS FOR YOU TOO! …i have no interest in elaborating on the last sentence.)

    so please help yourself.

    one last point: there was a certain comment that was not printed here.I am submitting it again just in case it was some other technical error that led to it’s not being published.

  60. damoN Says:

    woooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

    @surjo
    ur language is amazing…seems ur writing skills are equally good as ur programming skills.

    @manish
    oye itna seriously baato ko mat lo yaar.Chill!!!!

  61. Manish Says:

    I never take anything so seriously, but when people lose their power of seeing and judging I dont have any other way.

    I said a hundred times that comment moderation queue is empty, still some people keep on pressing their claims just for cheap publicity.
    Check my comment no 49,53,56 and 58 . I said the same thing in all of them but these thing dont enter the heads of some people.

  62. surjodeb Says:

    fair enough… point noted mr.sinha.

    so r u done then with your chitchat and defending yourself?

    (u said u didn’t indulge in the above… that’s why i am askin.)
    :)

  63. surjodeb Says:

    ps - i just realized you are still obsessed with this post on your blog when you have already submitted 2 more blog posts after this.
    really speaks a lot about a lot of things…

    anyways, gtg now. gn.

  64. Manish Says:

    @Surjo
    I dont need to defend myself. The whole world knows what kinda person you are.

    Am I obsessed with this post. Since you come back daily and leave back some comment, so as a good blog owner I have the responsibility of coming back and replying to your comments. Even though I post a hundred articles still I may come back to the first post if someone had commented on it

  65. surjodeb Says:

    thank you sir, your help is most appreciated.
    ps- my name is surjodeb. And I wasn’t talkin about defending your comments regarding me….

    (which as is defined libel, u obviously cannot)

    pps- why r u being so polite all of a sudden? …doesn’t work yaar.

    just be yourself.
    …whatever/whoever you might be…
    thanks.

    one more thing it’s growing boring talking to you now.-this is directionless and especially with you. bye bai dude.

  66. surjodeb Says:

    CORRECTION:(typos corrected)

    thank you sir, your help is most appreciated.
    ps- my name is surjodeb. And I wasn’t talkin about defending your comments regarding ME…

    (which as is defined libel, u obviously cannot)

    pps- why r u being so polite all of a sudden? …doesn’t work yaar!

    just be yourself.
    …whatever/whoever you might be…
    thanks.

    one more thing, it’s growing boring talking to you now.-this is directionless, and especially while talking with you!
    bye bai.

  67. Manish Says:

    I dont need to be polite, its just the situation which makes my comment look different.
    I am always what I am, thanks for the advice
