The Real Installations
January 25th, 2008So finally we did it! More than 40 installations in 3 hours! Its a kind of record at MIT. Fedora 8 found a decent place on the laptops of people who turned up to get this magical OS installed. As far as Ubuntu is concerned, we didnt have the script for getting the ATI Graphics card drivers to work. Check out my previous posts for gaining more knowledge about the problem faced on ATI cards.
I expected that since the laptops were given by the colleges and had the same configuration, they should behave similarly. To our utter surpise no two laptops behaved the same. Even on some laptops the resizing of partitions failed. Some laptops were unable to boot even in text mode installer. One guy had 4 primary partitions and a heap of free space, so what more can we do with his system? Nothing! We asked him to meet us personally and take a backup of the two partitions on an external hard disk. One guy messaged me that he tried to format his partition and some problems cropped up. These problems do occur.
I have some more pics. Here is the album for yesterday’s event. Click Here

40 is more for a start. People usually run away listening to words like “Linux”. They have a very geeky thinking of this stuff.
Though 40 was a comfortable number, we were really short of manpower to help out the people during the event. This is not just *another* event where one person speaks and others listen, but we had to attend each and every people who were facing problems.

@Balu
That’s not the case, there is always a trade-off in all things in this world. The price paid for excellent security,free softwares updates,virus-free nature etc is the problems that crop up usually on Linux.
The design of linux is very modular,i know these might be going a bit above your head, if you still have any misconceptions, you are always invited to any LUG meet, its open for all, no registration, no entry free. ANyone can attend.
In any case you want to try out Linux without harming or touching your computer, you can contact me, I will give you a live CD which you can try out without installing. That’s why I mean live…

Yes! I know about it, on one of the issues it covered the negligence of MU towards MIC, which let in a lot of debates and I heard that MU and MIC administration had to intervene. MIC director said that it was not an official magazine.
Well keep it up, a nice initiative, and by the way why dont you move it to a proper domain with a hosting. Domain would cost some 400INR and there are lots of free hosts out there.
I could help you out in finding it, I have done this earlier.
